Self Assessment In College: Your Most Important To-Do List
The term “personal awareness” is thrown around a lot these days. But once you’re a college student it suddenly takes on a whole new level of importance. To best ensure you’re carving out a path to success, here are some tried and true self-assessment tips you can use to stay on track.
Think about it this way: being a college student can be taxing, both physically and emotionally – the sooner you learn stress management, the more equipped you’ll be in navigating the road from where you are today to your graduation ceremony!

Striving for Balance : How well am I balancing all the pieces of my life?
The life of a college student includes juggling multiple facets of life – studying, work, relationships, family and personal health & well-being, to name a few. The key to success is balance!
- Map out a typical week. How are you spending your time? What habits do you practice that keep you most focused, confident and calm? (good sleep, keeping a calendar, joining study groups)
- Prioritize your “to-do” list:
- What do I need to do more of?
- What do I need to do less of?
Connecting Actions to Goals : Is the path that I am on leading me towards the future I want?
Think back to when you first decided to go to college. What goals and dreams motivated you? These ambitions should guide your college experience and drive you to a strong finish! Though your major or vocation may change, the values that they are rooted in (a better life for yourself, family, or community) are consistent.
- Write down your goals and dreams for life after college & refer to them frequently throughout your college journey. Try a Vision Board! Remember that it’s OKAY to revise them as you go.
- Check in with your Academic Adviser frequently to make sure you’re taking the right coursework for your intended major(s) and/or minor(s)
Personal Assessment : What am I doing well & what needs to work?
Taking a personal assessment is not just about your areas of growth, but also taking a moment to celebrate what you’re already doing well!
- Identify what you’re doing well, continue doing it and aspire to be better!
- Embrace areas that need work as opportunities to become your best self – we are all a “work in progress.”
- Identify specific things you are already doing well – like asking for support when needed or managing your calendar – and keep doing them!
- Focus on 1-2 areas you can commit to working on and develop S.M.A.R.T Goals to achieve them.
Self assessment is not about overhauling your life, but instead about making adjustments where helpful. Think baby steps to get started: maybe it’s getting an hour more of sleep, thinking about your long term goals more frequently, or perhaps taking three minutes to send an email to ask an important question of an adviser you’ve been putting off.
